Building resilience and skills for compassionate care
Overview
This training workshop was designed to equip nursing students with a foundational understanding of CBT—an evidence-based approach that explores the link between thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. The aim was to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical exposure, enhancing students’ ability to integrate psychological care into their professional practice while also supporting personal growth.
Identifying the Problem
Nursing professionals often face emotionally demanding situations that require both resilience and empathy. While they are trained in clinical care, many lack structured exposure to psychological tools like CBT that can help them manage their own stress and effectively support patients’ mental health needs.
Solution & Session Delivery
The workshop was conducted over two days through interactive, experiential learning methods. Students engaged in:
1. Conceptual Learning
- Introduction to the cognitive model and its role in understanding the cycle of thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.
- Application of CBT principles to healthcare settings.
2. Practical Application
- Role plays and case scenarios to translate theory into practice.
- Worksheets and exercises to reinforce learning.
- Videos and guided discussions to connect real-life contexts with CBT techniques.
This blend of structured learning and hands-on activities made the sessions engaging, relatable, and impactful.
Why It Matters
Introducing nursing students to CBT at an early stage builds critical psychological skills that enhance both patient care and personal resilience. With these tools, future healthcare professionals can provide more holistic support, maintain their own mental well-being, and deliver compassionate, evidence-based care.
